Installing the Smart Things GPS tracker

Fit the ESP32 tracker in a vehicle, connect the ignition wire and the SIM card.

These steps are for the Smart Things tracker (ST-GPS4G: ESP32 with a GPS module and a 4G modem, or Wi-Fi only).

Safety: disconnect the vehicle battery before wiring. The engine-cut relay must be fitted by a qualified auto electrician; a wrong connection can stop a vehicle while driving.

SIM card

Use a data SIM with mobile internet enabled (no PIN code). Ask the SIM provider for its APN (internet setting) if the tracker does not connect.

Wiring

WireConnect to
Power + / −Permanent 12 V (or 24 V through the supplied converter) and ground
ACC (ignition)A wire that has power only when the ignition is on. It tells the portal the engine is on and records more often
Relay (engine cut, optional)In series with the fuel pump or starter circuit, through an automotive relay

Mount the GPS antenna facing the sky (under the dashboard, not under metal).

First start

  1. Power the tracker outdoors. The first GPS fix can take a few minutes.
  2. If your provider asks, set the APN once over the USB serial console (115200 baud): apn <name>, then reboot.
  3. Add it in the portal with Add device.

While moving it records a position every 10 seconds, when parked every 5 minutes, and also on every turn. With no mobile signal it keeps up to 600 positions and sends them later, so the history has no gaps.
